Book 28, Question 22 · Video
Why does pulling your hands back help you catch a fast ball?
When a ball hits your hands, it has to stop. If you keep your hands stiff, it stops in a very short time and the force is large, which stings. If your hands move back with the ball, it stops over a longer time, so the force is smaller. This is the same idea behind air bags and padded landings. Good catchers give with the ball.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does pulling your hands back help you catch a fast ball?
The Big Idea
Ouch! Catching a fast ball can sting. But there's a trick to make it softer. Pull your hands back!
Stopping a Ball
Step one: Stopping a Ball. When a ball hits your hands, it has to stop. If you keep your hands stiff, it stops in a very short time and the force is large, which stings.
Giving Hands
Step two: Giving Hands. If your hands move back with the ball, it stops over a longer time. So the force is smaller and the catch feels gentler.
Same Idea
Step three: Same Idea. This is the same idea behind air bags and padded landings. Good catchers give with the ball.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Big sting. Soft catch. Longer is gentler. Spread out.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Baseball gloves have deep pockets to help absorb force. Pull hands back. More time, less force. Like an air bag.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Have a partner toss you a soft ball. Catch it with stiff hands. Then catch it while pulling your hands back. Compare how each felt. Which felt better?
Outro
Pulling your hands back when catching makes the ball stop over a longer time, so the force is smaller and it stings less. Air bags and padded landings work the same way. Good catchers give with the ball! Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Share what you learned with someone at home, and see what they think!
