Book 28, Question 21 · Video
Why do pool balls fly off at angles after hitting each other?
When a moving ball hits another ball at rest, it passes along its push. If the hit is straight on, the first ball stops and the second rolls off. If it hits off-center, both balls move away at angles that are about 90 degrees apart. The energy and motion are shared according to how the balls meet. Players use this to plan shots.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do pool balls fly off at angles after hitting each other?
The Big Idea
Hit one pool ball into another. They zoom off in different directions! Why?
Passing the Push
Step one: Passing the Push. When a moving ball hits another ball at rest, it passes along its push. The motion gets shared.
Straight or Angled
Step two: Straight or Angled. If the hit is straight on, the first ball stops and the second rolls off. If it hits off-center, both balls move away at angles about 90 degrees apart.
Planning Shots
Step three: Planning Shots. The energy and motion are shared according to how the balls meet. Players use this to plan shots.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First ball stops. Both move. Paths split. Players plan.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Billiards players call the first ball the cue ball. Straight hits stop it. About 90 degrees apart. Players plan angles.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Place a coin on a smooth table. Slide a second coin into it. Try different angles. Draw the paths. Keep coins away from little kids.
Outro
When one pool ball hits another, it passes along its push. A straight hit stops the first ball and sends the second off, while an off-center hit sends both away at about 90 degrees apart.
