Book 28, Question 21

Why do pool balls fly off at angles after hitting each other?

When a moving ball hits another ball at rest, it passes along its push.

If the hit is straight on, the first ball stops and the second rolls off. If it hits off-center, both balls move away at angles that are about 90 degrees apart. The energy and motion are shared according to how the balls meet. Players use this to plan shots.
