Book 28, Question 10 · Video
Why does a football fly in a spiral?
When a quarterback throws with a spin, the ball spins around its long axis like a top. Spinning objects resist changes in direction, so the nose stays pointed along its path. Without spin, a football would tumble end over end and be hard to catch. A spiral also has less air drag, so it flies farther and straighter.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does a football fly in a spiral?
The Big Idea
A perfect football pass spins like a bullet! It's called a spiral. Why does spin help?
Spinning
Step one: Spinning. When a quarterback throws with a spin, the ball spins around its long axis like a top. Spinning objects resist changes in direction.
Pointed Nose
Step two: Pointed Nose. The nose stays pointed along its path. Without spin, a football would tumble end over end and be hard to catch.
Less Drag
Step three: Less Drag. A spiral also has less air drag. So it flies farther and straighter.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Spin steadies it. Nose points ahead. Less drag. More accurate.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A flying disc flies steadily for the same reason: it spins. Spin keeps it steady. No spin means tumbling. Spirals fly farther.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Roll up a pair of socks. Throw them with a spin. Throw them without a spin. Stay away from people and windows. Which flies straighter?
Outro
A football flies in a spiral because spinning around its long axis keeps the nose pointed along its path, like a top. Without spin, it would tumble. Spirals also have less drag, so they fly farther and straighter. Spin is the secret. Science is amazing! Keep asking questions!
