Book 28, Question 9 · Video

How hard should a ball be pumped for different sports?

Video · 1:45 · Crafty Clover explains, from A Million Whys Book 28

Each sport has its own air pressure. Basketballs are pumped to about 8 pounds per square inch, so they bounce well off a hard floor. Volleyballs are pumped to just 4 to 5, so they are soft for hitting with hands. Soccer balls are pumped higher, so they travel far when kicked. Too flat and a ball feels dead, too hard and it hurts.

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How hard should a ball be pumped for different sports?

The Big Idea

Some balls are bouncy and hard. Others are soft and squishy. How much air should they have?

Basketballs

Step one: Basketballs. Each sport has its own air pressure. Basketballs are pumped to about 8 pounds per square inch, so they bounce well off a hard floor.

Volleyballs

Step two: Volleyballs. Volleyballs are pumped to just 4 to 5 pounds per square inch. That keeps them soft for hitting with hands.

Soccer Balls

Step three: Soccer Balls. Soccer balls are pumped higher, so they travel far when kicked. Too flat and a ball feels dead, too hard and it hurts.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! About 8. About 4 to 5. Higher. Gauges help.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Ball pumps with gauges show the pressure. Hard floors need bounce. Soft for hands. Too hard hurts.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Find a basketball and a volleyball. Squeeze each one gently. Compare how they feel. Which is firmer? Why might that be?

Outro

Each sport pumps its balls differently. Basketballs have about 8 pounds per square inch to bounce on hard floors, volleyballs only 4 to 5 for soft hits, and soccer balls more for long kicks. Too flat feels dead! Check the pressure before you play. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me!
