Book 28, Question 10
Why does a football fly in a spiral?
When a quarterback throws with a spin, the ball spins around its long axis like a top.
Spinning objects resist changes in direction, so the nose stays pointed along its path. Without spin, a football would tumble end over end and be hard to catch. A spiral also has less air drag, so it flies farther and straighter.
