How did early crystal radios work?
In the early 1900s, simple radios used a piece of mineral crystal such as galena and a thin wire called a cat's whisker touching it. The crystal turned radio waves from the air into tiny electric signals that could be heard in earphones. Crystal sets needed no battery at all, because the radio waves themselves gave the power. Many kids have built them.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did early crystal radios work?
The Big Idea
Long ago, people built radios with no batteries! They used a crystal. Let's tune in.
Crystal and Whisker
Step one: Crystal and Whisker. In the early 1900s, simple radios used a piece of mineral crystal such as galena. A thin wire called a cat's whisker touched it.
Turning Waves
Step two: Turning Waves. The crystal turned radio waves from the air into tiny electric signals. They could be heard in earphones.
No Battery
Step three: No Battery. Crystal sets needed no battery at all, because the radio waves themselves gave the power. Many kids have built them.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Antenna catches waves. Crystal converts. Whisker touches. Earphone plays.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Crystal sets are still sold as science kits. A cat's whisker wire. No battery needed. Galena was the crystal.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a crystal radio. Show the antenna. Show the crystal and whisker. Show the earphone. Connect them with lines.
Outro
Early crystal radios used a galena crystal touched by a thin cat's whisker wire. The crystal turned radio waves into tiny electric signals heard in earphones, and needed no battery. Many kids built them! Simple can be amazing. Maybe you can build one too someday! Radio science is fun. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question. Keep looking, keep learning, and keep asking why! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
