Book 27, Question 114 · Video
Why are jet engine blades grown as one crystal?
Inside a jet engine, hot gases are hotter than the melting point of the metal. The blades spin quickly and endure heat and force. Ordinary metal has many tiny crystals, and the boundaries between them are weak spots where blades slowly stretch. Engineers grow special blades from just one crystal of nickel alloy, so there are no weak boundaries. Tiny cooling holes also protect them.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are jet engine blades grown as one crystal?
The Big Idea
Jet engines get super hot! Their blades are grown as a single crystal. Why?
Extreme Heat
Step one: Extreme Heat. Inside a jet engine, hot gases are hotter than the melting point of the metal. The blades spin quickly and endure heat and force.
Weak Spots
Step two: Weak Spots. Ordinary metal has many tiny crystals, and the boundaries between them are weak spots. There, blades can slowly stretch.
One Crystal
Step three: One Crystal. Engineers grow special blades from just one crystal of nickel alloy, so there are no weak boundaries. Tiny cooling holes also protect them.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Gases are hot. Blades spin fast. One crystal is strong. Holes cool them.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Single crystal blades can last thousands of flight hours. Boundaries are weak spots. One crystal is stronger. Cooling holes help.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find a stick with many weak joints, like taped pieces. Find one solid stick of the same length. Gently bend each one. Which bends or breaks first? How is this like blades?
Outro
Jet engine blades face heat hotter than the metal's melting point. Ordinary metal's many crystal boundaries are weak spots, so engineers grow blades from a single crystal of nickel alloy, with cooling holes for extra protection. Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises. Keep asking big questions, and keep exploring with me! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books.
