Why are diamonds on saw blades and drill bits?
Diamond is the hardest known natural material, so it can cut or grind almost anything. Tiny diamonds glued to the edge of a saw blade cut through stone, concrete, and tile. Drill bits tipped with diamonds can reach deep into rock. Sandpapers use other hard crystals, like garnet and corundum. The crystals wear away the softer material and stay sharp.

The Big Idea
Diamonds aren't only for jewelry! They're on saws and drills too. Why?
Hardest
Step one: Hardest. Diamond is the hardest known natural material, so it can cut or grind almost anything. Nothing much can scratch it.
Blades and Bits
Step two: Blades and Bits. Tiny diamonds glued to the edge of a saw blade cut through stone, concrete, and tile. Drill bits tipped with diamonds can reach deep into rock.
Other Crystals
Step three: Other Crystals. Sandpapers use other hard crystals, like garnet and corundum. The crystals wear away the softer material and stay sharp.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Diamond is hardest. Garnet sands. Corundum grinds. Blades cut.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Most diamonds used in industry are lab-grown. Saws cut stone. Drills reach deep rock. Workers wear safety gear.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Find a piece of wood. Rub it with coarse sandpaper. Then rub it with fine sandpaper. Feel the difference. Which smooths best?
