Why does quartz grow pointy tips?
Quartz crystals often grow from the wall of a cavity or crack, with their base stuck to the rock and the other end free in open space. Only the free end can grow neat, sloped faces that meet in a point. The attached end has nowhere to grow and stays rough. Many quartz crystals look like six-sided columns topped with a pointed pyramid.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does quartz grow pointy tips?
The Big Idea
Quartz crystals often have pointy tips. They look like little pencils! Why are they pointy?
Stuck and Free
Step one: Stuck and Free. Quartz crystals often grow from the wall of a cavity or crack. Their base is stuck to the rock, and the other end is free in open space.
The Point
Step two: The Point. Only the free end can grow neat, sloped faces that meet in a point. The attached end has nowhere to grow and stays rough.
Columns
Step three: Columns. Many quartz crystals look like six-sided columns. They're topped with a pointed pyramid.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The base is rough. The column has six sides. The tip is pointy. Space allows growth.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Quartz is one of the most common minerals on Earth's surface. Pointy pyramid tops. Six-sided columns too. Bases stay rough.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Draw a six-sided quartz crystal. Add its pointed tip. Draw its rough base. Color it clear or purple. Label each part.
Outro
Quartz grows pointy tips because its base sticks to rock while the free end grows into open space, forming sloped faces that meet in a point. Many look like six-sided columns with pyramid tops. Look for points on quartz. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! Share what you learned with someone at home, and see what they think!
