Book 27, Question 42
Why does quartz grow pointy tips?
Quartz crystals often grow from the wall of a cavity or crack, with their base stuck to the rock and the other end free in open space.
Only the free end can grow neat, sloped faces that meet in a point. The attached end has nowhere to grow and stays rough. Many quartz crystals look like six-sided columns topped with a pointed pyramid.
