Why do some crystals have stripes or bands?
As a crystal grows layer by layer, conditions around it may change: the temperature, the amount of dissolved minerals, or tiny impurities such as iron. Each change can leave a colored band. These are called growth bands, a bit like tree rings. Agate, a type of quartz, shows beautiful curved stripes inside, and some amethyst crystals have color zones.

The Big Idea
Some crystals have stripes inside! They look like tree rings. What makes those bands?
Changing Conditions
Step one: Changing Conditions. As a crystal grows layer by layer, conditions around it may change. The temperature, the amount of dissolved minerals, or tiny impurities such as iron can all shift.
Colored Bands
Step two: Colored Bands. Each change can leave a colored band. These are called growth bands, a bit like tree rings.
Agate and Amethyst
Step three: Agate and Amethyst. Agate, a type of quartz, shows beautiful curved stripes inside. Some amethyst crystals have color zones too.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Heat can change. Minerals vary. Iron adds color. It's like tree rings.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Bands can show how the surroundings changed over time. Like tree rings. Agate has curved stripes. Amethyst has color zones.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Layer different colors of play dough or clay. Press them together. Slice through with a plastic knife. See the bands! How is it like agate?
Outro
Crystals get stripes when conditions change as they grow, like temperature, minerals, or tiny bits of iron. Each change leaves a colored growth band, like tree rings. Agate shows beautiful curved stripes! Every stripe tells a story. Agate is a crystal diary. Science is amazing! Remember, every big discovery starts with a small question.
