How did a boxy fish inspire a car?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How did a boxy fish inspire a car?

The Big Idea

A fish shaped like a box helped design a car! It's called the boxfish. Let's see what engineers learned.

The Boxfish

Step one: The Boxfish. The boxfish looks like a rectangle with fins. Yet it swims easily and has strong, light armor.

Concept Car

Step two: Concept Car. Designers at a car company built a concept car shaped like a boxfish. It had a roomy interior but slipped through the air with little drag.

Bony Plates

Step three: Bony Plates. Engineers also studied the fish's bony plates. They learned how to build strong, light shapes.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! It is boxy. It has armor. Water flows smoothly. Cars copied it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A boxfish's body acts like a tough, light box. Lives on coral reefs. Very little drag. A concept car test.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Use clay to build a boxy shape. Build a streamlined shape too. Drag each through water. Which one moved more easily? Were you surprised?

Outro

A boxy fish inspired a concept car because the boxfish swims easily with little drag and has strong, light armor. Engineers studied its shape and bony plates. Sometimes the most surprising shapes work best. A fish that looks clumsy turned out to be a smart swimmer! Science is amazing! The world is full of surprises.
