How do scientists measure the quality of the air?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do scientists measure the quality of the air?

The Big Idea

How clean is the air today? Scientists measure it with special stations! Let's see how.

Stations

Step one: Stations. Air-monitoring stations pull air through instruments. They count tiny particles and measure gases such as ozone.

The Index

Step two: The Index. In Canada, the numbers are combined into the Air Quality Health Index, a scale from 1 to 10 or more. It turns science into one easy number.

Planning

Step three: Planning. Low numbers mean clean air, and high numbers mean people should take it easy outdoors. Checking the index helps you plan your day.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Low is clean air. Moderate is okay. High means take it easy. Very high means stay inside.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Some small air sensors can be attached to a bike or backpack. Check the index online. Rain can clean the air. Play outside on clean days.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Look up the air quality for your city with a grown-up. Do it every day for a week. Write down each number. Make a chart. Which day had the cleanest air?
