Why can smoke from faraway wildfires reach a city?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can smoke from faraway wildfires reach a city?

The Big Idea

A wildfire can burn far from any city. Yet its smoke can turn city skies orange! How does smoke travel so far?

High Smoke

Step one: High Smoke. Big wildfires send smoke high into the air. Strong winds can carry it for hundreds or even thousands of miles.

Orange Skies

Step two: Orange Skies. In 2023, smoke from Canadian fires turned skies orange in New York City. People could see and smell the smoke.

Staying Safe

Step three: Staying Safe. The tiny particles in smoke can bother eyes and lungs. On smoky days, stay inside with windows closed, use air filters if you have them, and check the air quality.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Stay indoors. Keep windows shut. Run a filter. A snug mask can help.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! On smoky days, a snug N95 mask or an indoor air filter can help. Ask a grown-up. Winds carry smoke far. Smoke colors the sky. Check air quality.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! On a map, mark a forest fire far away. Mark a city in another place. Draw arrows showing how wind might carry smoke. How far did the smoke travel? What should people in the city do?

Outro

Smoke from faraway wildfires reaches cities because it rises high and strong winds carry it hundreds or thousands of miles. On smoky days, stay inside and check the air quality. Science is amazing!
