Book 25, Question 48 · Video
Why are more city buses powered by electricity?
An electric bus runs on a big battery and a quiet motor. It has no tailpipe, so it makes cleaner air on busy streets. It can also use its brakes to put some energy back into the battery. Buses are charged at night or at stops using special plugs. Because city buses stop and start a lot, electric motors work well for them.

Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why are more city buses powered by electricity?
The Big Idea
More and more city buses run on electricity! They are quiet and clean. Let's find out how they work.
Battery Power
Step one: Battery Power. An electric bus runs on a big battery and a quiet motor. It has no tailpipe, so it makes cleaner air on busy streets.
Braking Energy
Step two: Braking Energy. The bus can use its brakes to put some energy back into the battery. That is called regenerative braking.
Charging
Step three: Charging. Buses are charged at night or at stops using special plugs. Because city buses stop and start a lot, electric motors work well for them.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The battery stores energy. The motor turns the wheels. Brakes recharge the battery. Chargers fill it up.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Electric buses are much quieter than diesel buses. No tailpipe smoke. Some charge at bus stops. Braking makes some energy.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Listen to the sound of a regular bus. If you can, listen to an electric bus too. Describe the difference in a few words. Which is quieter? Why might quiet streets be nice?
Outro
More city buses run on electricity because battery buses are quiet, have no tailpipe, recover energy when braking, and work well for stop-and-go city routes. Science is amazing!
