Book 25, Question 49 · Video
How do traffic engineers count cars?
Engineers use rubber tubes laid across the road that sense each axle as a wheel rolls over it. Cameras and computers can recognize vehicles, and loops in the pavement sense cars passing. The counts show where roads are busy at different times and help plan traffic lights and new lanes. You can count too: sit safely on a sidewalk with a grown-up and make tally marks.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do traffic engineers count cars?
The Big Idea
How many cars drive down a street each day? Traffic engineers count them! They have clever counting tools.
Rubber Tubes
Step one: Rubber Tubes. Engineers use rubber tubes laid across the road that sense each axle as a wheel rolls over it. Each bump of air is counted.
Cameras and Loops
Step two: Cameras and Loops. Cameras and computers can recognize vehicles. Loops in the pavement sense cars passing.
Planning
Step three: Planning. The counts show where roads are busy at different times. They help plan traffic lights and new lanes.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Tubes feel wheels. Cameras see vehicles. Loops sense metal. Graphs show the results.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Counts are often taken at the same spots every year to see how traffic changes. Bikes get counted too. Tally marks count fast. Rush hour is busiest.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, sit safely on a sidewalk away from the road. Count the cars, buses, and bikes that pass in ten minutes. Use tally marks. Make a graph of your counts. Which vehicle was most common?
