Book 24, Question 6 · Video
Why does it get hotter the deeper you go underground?
Earth's center is very hot, and its heat slowly flows outward. As you go deeper, you get closer to that heat. In most places, the temperature goes up by roughly 1 degree Fahrenheit for every 70 feet down. That is why deep mines need cooling and why the bottom of a very deep hole is so hot.

What Crafty Clover says in this video
Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why does it get hotter the deeper you go underground?
The Big Idea
Earth's center is very hot. Its heat slowly flows outward toward the surface. The deeper you go, the closer you get to that heat!
Hot Center
Step one: Hot Center. Earth's center is very hot, and its heat slowly flows outward. As you go deeper, you get closer to that heat.
Getting Warmer
Step two: Getting Warmer. In most places, the temperature goes up by roughly 1 degree Fahrenheit for every 70 feet down. Go down 700 feet, and it is about 10 degrees warmer.
Cooling Mines
Step three: Cooling Mines. That is why deep mines need cooling systems to protect workers. Just under the surface, though, the ground stays cool.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Near the surface, the ground stays cool. Deep rock is warmer. Deep mines can get very hot. Earth's center is hottest of all.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some hot springs get their heat from deep underground. Some homes use the ground's steady temperature to help heat and cool them. Just under the surface, the ground stays cool, even in summer. Volcanoes show us how hot it is deep inside Earth.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up to help you use a thermometer. Measure the temperature of the air. Then measure the soil's surface. Then measure the soil two inches down. Which one is warmest, and which is coolest?
Outro
It gets hotter deeper underground because Earth's center is very hot and its heat flows outward. In most places, it warms about 1 degree Fahrenheit for every 70 feet down. Science is amazing!
