Why Do Airplane Wings Bend Upward in Flight?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do airplane wings bend upward in flight?

The Big Idea

In flight, an airplane's wings bend upward. It might look scary, but it is by design. Wings are made to flex!

Lift Bends Tips

Step one: lift bends the tips. A wing is made to flex. When the wing makes lift, the tips are pushed upward, and on big airliners they can rise several feet.

Bumps Absorbed

Step two: bumps absorbed. The bending helps the wing handle bumps in the air without cracking. It works like a diving board.

Tested Hard

Step three: tested hard. Engineers test wings by bending them far more than any flight would. A wing that flexes safely is stronger than one that is too stiff.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Lift pushes the tips up. The wing absorbs bumps. It springs back. Tests prove it is strong.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Engineers bend test wings far beyond anything flight would ever ask of them. The tips of big jets can rise several feet. Flexing helps absorb bumps. A flexible wing is stronger than a stiff one.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Bend a plastic ruler gently with your hands. Let go and watch it spring back. Feel how it flexes. That is just like a wing. Then tell a friend what you found out.

Outro

Airplane wings bend upward in flight because they are made to flex, and a flexible wing is a strong wing. Science is amazing! Stay curious!
