What Did the Wright Brothers Discover About Flight?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What did the Wright brothers discover about flight?

The Big Idea

Orville and Wilbur Wright were bicycle makers. They had a big dream about flying. And they made it happen!

Studying Birds

Step one: studying birds. Orville and Wilbur Wright were bicycle makers who studied how birds twist their wings. They wanted to control a plane in the air.

Gliders and Engines

Step two: gliders and engines. They built gliders, a wind tunnel, and engines. They learned how to control a plane in three directions.

Kitty Hawk

Step three: Kitty Hawk. On December seventeenth, nineteen oh three, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, their Flyer stayed in the air for twelve seconds. It traveled one hundred twenty feet.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The brothers fixed bicycles. They studied birds. They built and tested wings. Then they flew!

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The first flight was shorter than the wingspan of a modern jumbo jet. It lasted twelve seconds. It happened near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Careful testing changed the world.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Measure one hundred twenty feet outside, using big steps. Mark the start and the end. Imagine that was the length of the very first flight. Compare it to a school bus. Tell a grown-up what you discover!

Outro

The Wright brothers discovered how to control a plane by careful testing, and their first flight changed the world. Science is amazing! Keep wondering and keep exploring! There is always more to discover, and you are a great science explorer! So the next time you wonder about this, you will know just where to start looking.
