Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How tall does a hill have to be to become a mountain?

The Big Idea

There is no perfect rule for how tall a hill must be to become a mountain! Many maps call land a mountain when it rises about 1,000 feet, or 300 meters, above the land around it. Lower bumps are called hills, and mountains are usually steeper.

Measure the Rise

Step one: measure the rise. Mapmakers check how far a bump climbs above the ground around it. If it climbs about 1,000 feet or more, many maps call it a mountain.

Check the Shape

Step two: check the shape. Mountains tend to have steeper sides than hills, with a clear peak or ridge. Hills are usually lower, rounder, and gentler to look at.

Ask the Locals

Step three: ask the locals. Different countries use different measures. Sometimes a name people have used for hundreds of years matters more than any number.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A hill is a lower, gentler bump of land. A mountain rises higher above the land around it. Mountains also have steeper sides. And they often end in a clear peak or ridge.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The word mountain can mean something different from one country to the next. Many maps use about 1,000 feet as the rule. Local names often win over the numbers. Maps and careful measuring help us decide.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! With a grown-up, look at a map of your area. Pick the highest bump of land. Hill or mountain? Say why! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

A mountain is a high, steep rise, and the rule changes from place to place. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
