What Are the Biggest Mountain Ranges in the World?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What are the biggest mountain ranges in the world?

The Big Idea

A mountain range is a long row of mountains, like a giant fence across the land! The Himalayas hold the highest peaks on Earth, and the Andes are the longest range on land. Five famous ranges are the Himalayas, Andes, Rockies, Alps, and Appalachians.

Himalayas in Asia

Step one: the Himalayas. This range in Asia is about 1,500 miles long and holds the highest peaks on Earth. That includes Mount Everest, which is about 29,000 feet high.

Andes in South America

Step two: the Andes. They run down the whole western side of South America, about 4,300 miles. That makes them the longest mountain range on land, and condors and llamas live there.

Rockies, Alps, Appalachians

Step three: three more giants. The Rockies stretch from western Canada down into the United States, and the Alps cross Europe. The Appalachians run along eastern North America, and they are much older and rounder.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The Himalayas are in Asia. The Andes are in South America. The Rockies are in North America. And the Alps are in Europe, with the Appalachians back in North America too.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The Andes are about 4,300 miles long. That is longer than driving across Canada, with plenty of curves! Each range has its own story of how it rose. Ranges can stretch across many countries, so one row of mountains can be shared.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Find these five ranges on a globe or a map. Put a sticker on each one. Then say which continent each range is on! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
