Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can you safely explore a river?
The Big Idea
You can safely explore a river by watching from a safe spot with a grown-up! Looking, listening, and drawing are all great ways to learn about the river. You do not need to touch the water to discover a lot.
Go With a Grown-up
Step one: bring a grown-up. Visit with a grown-up and stay on trails and viewing platforms. Stay well back from steep or slippery banks, where the ground can give way.
Stay Out of the Water
Step two: keep out of the water. Never wade, swim, or play in a river, because currents, cold water, and hidden holes can be dangerous. On a boat, wear a life jacket every time, and go only with experienced grown-ups.
Look and Learn
Step three: observe. Look, listen, draw, and take photos. Notice the sounds, the colors, and the animals. Don't drink the water, and wash your hands afterward.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Always go with a grown-up. Stay on trails and viewing platforms, far from the edge. Wear a life jacket on boats. And wash your hands when you are done.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A safe river explorer can learn a lot just by watching. You can spot birds, bugs, ripples, and sandbars from the bank, and learn how the water moves. Notebooks and cameras are the best explorer tools. Ask a grown-up when you are unsure.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a river explorer checklist. Write grown-up, shoes, life jacket for boats, camera, notebook, and hand wash. Check it before your next outing. Then explore safely!
