How Does a Canal Lock Lift a Boat Uphill?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a canal lock lift a boat uphill?

The Big Idea

A canal lock lifts a boat uphill using only water and gravity! It is a chamber with gates at both ends. No pumps are needed, only gravity and patience.

Enter the Lock

Step one: enter. A boat sails into the lock chamber, and then the gates close behind it. The boat is now in a sealed box of water, ready to move up or down. The chamber is long enough for several boats.

Water Flows In

Step two: fill. Valves open and water flows in from the higher canal, pulled by gravity. The water level rises, and the boat rises with it, like a bath filling up around a toy. It can lift a boat many feet.

Sail Out

Step three: leave. When the water level matches the upper canal, the front gates open and the boat sails out. To go down, the process runs in reverse, and water is let out. It is like a staircase for boats.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a lock! Gates close the chamber. Valves let the water flow. The boat sits inside. And the rising water lifts it up.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Canada's Rideau Canal has locks that are still worked by hand. Workers turn big cranks to open the gates. Locks let boats climb hills. Stay back from lock edges, with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like an engineer! With a grown-up, fill a plastic box with water and push a toy boat into a shallow side compartment. Slowly add water. Watch the boat rise! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
