Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How is a canal different from a river?
The Big Idea
A river is a natural channel that formed on its own, but a canal is dug by people! A canal is made for boats. Canals use the same water but work very differently from rivers.
Natural River
Step one: rivers. A river formed on its own over time, following the lay of the land. It winds and curves, and it can flood in spring when snow melts. Its path may slowly change over many years.
Dug Canal
Step two: canals. A canal is dug by people, often with straight edges and gates called locks. It stays in its channel, with the water level controlled, so boats can travel safely in a steady depth.
Connect the Water
Step three: why dig one? Canals connect rivers and lakes, or make shortcuts for boats. They use the same water, but they lack natural curves and wild flooding. Many canals were built for trade and are now used for fun.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at a river and a canal! A river curves and wanders. A canal is straight and steady. Locks help boats change levels. And both carry boats.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The Rideau Canal in Ontario freezes into a long skating rink in winter. Skaters glide for miles. Skate only where a grown-up says the ice is safe. Never walk on river ice.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a mapmaker! Draw a river with curves and a canal with straight lines, side by side. Label which one is natural. Label which one is made by people! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
