Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is a ford, and why were fords important?

The Big Idea

A ford is a shallow, firm place where people could cross a river on foot or by cart! Long ago, there were few bridges. So fords were very important crossing points, and roads led to them from all directions.

What Is a Ford?

Step one: the ford. A ford is a spot where the river is shallow and the bottom is firm, such as gravel or rock. Travelers once crossed there on foot, on horses, or with carts, picking their way over the stones.

Towns at Fords

Step two: towns grew. Many towns grew up near fords because people had to pass through there. Shops, inns, and markets appeared, and later bridges were built nearby. Some towns still stand on the same spot today.

Names Tell a Tale

Step three: names. Names like Oxford, Stratford, and Bradford all come from fords. But rivers can rise quickly, so crossing a ford was risky, and today kids should never cross a river on their own.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a ford! The river is shallow here. The bottom is firm. Travelers could pass. And towns grew nearby.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Oxford means a place where oxen crossed the river. Rivers can rise quickly after rain. Today, we use bridges and crossings. Never cross a river without a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a word detective! Look up where your town's name came from. Does it have ford, bridge, or river in it? Ask a grown-up to help you! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Fords were shallow crossings that helped towns grow. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
