Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do young fish grow up in a river?

The Big Idea

Young fish grow up in safe nests and shelters, then slowly move to bigger water as they get strong! They hide, nibble tiny bugs, and grow. Calm spots and plants keep them safe, and every day they get a little bigger.

Egg Nests

Step one: laying eggs. Fish lay their eggs in nests in the gravel, or tangled in water plants. The water flowing around them brings fresh oxygen, and the gravel hides them from hungry animals.

Tiny Fry

Step two: hatching. The eggs hatch into tiny fish called fry, with a snack pack called a yolk sac attached. The yolk feeds them for the first days, until they can find tiny bugs to eat on their own.

Hide and Grow

Step three: hiding to grow. Fry hide in shallow, quiet water and nibble small bugs. They avoid fast water until they are strong, and underwater logs and plants give them shelter from bigger fish and from the current.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at a river nursery! Eggs hatch in a gravel nest. Tiny fry swim in quiet water. Plants give them places to hide. And logs make shady shelters.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Baby fish are often called fry. Fry have a yolk sac for food. Calm edges keep them from being swept away. Stay with a grown-up near any river.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Cut a river shape from paper. Use blue for fast water and green for calm edges. Where would baby fish hide? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
