Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do salmon swim up rivers?
The Big Idea
Many salmon hatch in a river, swim out to the ocean to grow, and then return to the river where they were born! They go home to lay their eggs. Then the next generation begins.
Born in a River
Step one: a river birth. Salmon eggs are laid in a nest in the river's gravel. They hatch into tiny fish that grow in the stream before swimming toward the ocean.
Ocean Adventure
Step two: grow in the ocean. In the sea, salmon find lots of food and grow much bigger, sometimes for several years. Then, when they are ready to breed, their bodies tell them it is time to go home.
The Trip Home
Step three: find the way. They find the way using smell, magnetic clues, and memory of their home stream. The trip upstream uses a huge amount of energy, and the next generation hatches in the gravel.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the salmon circle! It starts with eggs in gravel. Little fish hatch and grow. They swim to the ocean to get big. Then they swim home to begin again.
