Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do fish leap out of rivers?
The Big Idea
Fish jump out of rivers for lots of different reasons! Some are hunting, some are escaping, and some are traveling. And sometimes scientists are not sure why a fish jumped, so the mystery goes on.
Snack Jumps
Step one: a snack. Some fish leap up to snap insects that hover just above the surface. A quick jump is a good way to get a meal, and a bug in the air cannot swim away.
Itchy and Out of Air
Step two: other reasons. Others jump to shake off tiny pests that bother them, or to take a breath of air when the water has little oxygen. Splash! It might even be a way to scratch an itch.
Going Up
Step three: traveling. Migrating fish like salmon leap to get over small waterfalls and rapids on their way upstream. It takes a powerful tail and lots of energy, and sometimes the fish must try again and again.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look at the leaps! Some fish catch insects. Some gulp air. Some leap over rapids and small falls. And sometimes the reason is still a mystery.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some salmon can leap about six feet up a waterfall. That is as tall as a grown-up. Fish can also jump to get away from danger. Watch from a safe spot with a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Stand by a wall and mark how high you can jump. How does your leap compare with a salmon's? Be sure to jump safely on a soft floor! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
