What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do American eels swim from rivers to the faraway Sargasso Sea?

The Big Idea

American eels grow up in rivers, then swim all the way to the Sargasso Sea to have babies! The Sargasso Sea is a part of the Atlantic Ocean near Bermuda. It is one of the greatest journeys of any river animal.

Growing Up

Step one: growing up. American eels spend many years in rivers and streams, including rivers in Canada. They hide in mud and under rocks and eat insects, worms, and small fish.

The Big Swim

Step two: the big swim. When they are ready to breed, the grown eels swim down the river and out into the Atlantic Ocean. They head toward the Sargasso Sea, a long, long way from home.

Babies Return

Step three: babies come back. The eel babies are flat and clear, shaped like tiny leaves. They drift back on ocean currents and later swim up rivers to start the cycle again.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look at the eel journey! Eels grow up in a river. They swim out into the ocean. They reach the Sargasso Sea near Bermuda. And their leaf-shaped babies drift back.

Quick Facts
