Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a kingfisher dive for a snack?
The Big Idea
A belted kingfisher dives headfirst into the water to catch small fish! It is a champion fisher with a built-in spear. Then it flies back to a branch to enjoy its meal.
Look and Wait
Step one: spot a fish. A kingfisher perches on a branch over the water, or hovers in the air, looking for small fish. It has very sharp eyesight, and it can watch the water for a long time without moving.
Dive!
Step two: dive. When it spots a fish, it plunges headfirst into the water. Its sharp, spear-shaped bill slips in easily, and a clear eyelid protects its eyes.
Back to Perch
Step three: back to the branch. The kingfisher flies back to a perch to eat, often tapping the fish on the branch first. It nests in a tunnel that it digs into a riverbank, where the chicks stay safe.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Sharp eyes spot a small fish from above. A spear-shaped bill cuts the water. A clear eyelid protects its eyes. And its nest is a tunnel in the bank.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Kingfisher chicks grow up in a tunnel in the riverbank. The bill is shaped like a spear. A pointed shape slips into water easily. Watch birds from a safe spot, away from the edge.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Fold a paper airplane with a pointed nose. With a grown-up, drop it gently into a bowl of water. Does a pointy shape slip in easily? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
