Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a river cross a desert without drying up?
The Big Idea
A river can cross a desert without drying up if it starts where lots of rain or snow falls! These rivers are so big that the desert cannot use up their water quickly. The Nile and the Colorado River are two famous examples.
Wet Start
Step one: a wet start. Some rivers begin far away, where it rains or snows a lot. They gather so much water that they stay strong for a long way.
The Nile
Step two: the Nile. The Nile starts in the green highlands of eastern Africa. It flows north through the Sahara to the sea.
The Colorado
Step three: the Colorado River. It begins in snowy mountains in the Rocky Mountains. Then it runs through desert canyons, carrying lots of water that people use, too.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The water starts where it is wet. The river grows big and strong. It crosses dry land with plenty of water. And the Nile flows all the way to the sea.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! The Nile is one of the longest rivers on Earth. Its green banks make a ribbon of life through the Sahara. People use river water to farm, so it is shared carefully. Rivers are precious, so keep them clean.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Find the Nile on a map. Trace it from the start to the sea. What kind of land is on either side of the river? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
