Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some desert rivers vanish into the sand?
The Big Idea
Some desert rivers vanish into the sand because they lose more water than they gain! Loose sand and gravel soak up the water, and the hot air makes the rest evaporate. The river shrinks, and then it seems to disappear.
Thirsty Sand
Step one: the sand soaks up water. Loose sand and gravel are full of gaps. The river water sinks down into them, like water poured onto a pile of dry sand.
Hot Air
Step two: the hot air takes some. The hot, dry air makes the rest of the water evaporate. The river gets smaller and smaller as it goes along.
Underground Flow
Step three: some water flows below. Even when the river looks gone, some water may still flow underground. After a big rain, the river reappears and flows again.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! The river starts out strong. The sand soaks up water. The Sun dries up even more. But some water keeps flowing underground.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! A river that sinks into the sand is called a losing stream. A losing stream gives more water to the ground than it gets. Big rain can bring the river back to life. Never play in a dry riverbed when storms are near.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Make a mound of dry sand in a pan. Slowly pour a cup of water onto it. Watch how fast the water vanishes. Where does it go? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
