How Can a Lake Appear in the Desert After a Big Rain?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can a lake appear in the desert after a big rain?

The Big Idea

A lake can appear in the desert after a big rain because heavy rain fills dry basins with shallow water! These lakes are rare, and they do not last. When the water evaporates, the lake disappears again.

Heavy Rain

Step one: a big rain falls. In rare years, heavy rain runs into low, dry basins and fills them with shallow lakes. Water from far away flows in, too.

Life Bursts Out

Step two: life comes alive. Fish eggs and other tiny creatures that waited in the mud hatch. Lake Eyre in Australia fills during wet years, and birds arrive by the thousands.

Lake Disappears

Step three: the lake dries up. The water slowly evaporates under the hot Sun. The basin becomes dry salt and mud once more.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A big rain fills the basin. A shallow lake spreads out. Birds and animals arrive. Later, the lake dries and leaves salt.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Lake Eyre can go from dry salt to a giant lake and back again. Death Valley in California sometimes gets a lake in its lowest basin for a short time. The dry land bursts into life. Always stay away from floods and muddy shores.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw two pictures of the same basin, one dry and one with a lake. Add three animals that might appear when the water arrives. Show your pictures to someone. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
