Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a spring flow out of dry ground?
The Big Idea
A spring flows out of dry ground where underground water finds a way to the surface! It can come out through a crack in the rock, or where the land dips below the water level. In a desert, that makes a bright spot of green.
Water Below
Step one: water is hidden underground. Rain and snow soak into the ground and fill the gaps in rock. The water keeps moving, slowly flowing downhill.
Find a Crack
Step two: the water finds a way out. In deserts, cracks in rock or sloping layers can send water up to the surface. Or the land dips below the water level, and the water flows right out.
Ring of Green
Step three: life gathers around it. Some springs have flowed in the same place for thousands of years. Plants grow in a ring of green, and animals come to drink.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Layers of rock hold the water. Water squeezes through cracks. It flows out where the ground opens. And plants make a green ring around it.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some desert springs have flowed for thousands of years. The water inside can be very old. Springs are lifelines for wildlife in dry places. Look and enjoy, but never wade into a spring or disturb it.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Ask your grown-up to poke a small hole in the bottom of a plastic cup. Fill the cup with damp sand, and add water on top. Watch where the water comes out. That is a model spring! Share what you discover with a grown-up.
