Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is fossil water, and why is it so old?
The Big Idea
Fossil water is underground water that fell as rain a very long time ago! Under parts of the Sahara, some of it fell more than 20,000 years ago, when the climate was wetter. It stayed trapped deep in rock ever since.
Wetter Times
Step one: long ago, it rained more. Tens of thousands of years ago, parts of the Sahara had a wetter climate. Rain soaked down into the ground.
Trapped Deep
Step two: the water got trapped. It sank deep into porous rock, which has lots of tiny holes. It stays there like a savings account in a bank.
Little Refill
Step three: new rain barely refills it. So pumping the water out too fast could use it up. Scientists study the tiny atoms in the water to measure how old it is.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! First, rain fell long ago. Next, it sank into deep, porous rock. There it stayed trapped for ages. So people must use it carefully.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Some underground desert water is more than 20,000 years old. That is older than any city on Earth! Because it hardly refills, it is like a savings account. Saving water helps everyone, so turn off the tap.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist! Imagine a bank account with 100 coins that nobody refills. Spend 10 coins every day. Draw a bar that gets shorter each day. How many days until it is empty? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
Outro
Fossil water fell as rain ages ago, so we should use it wisely. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
