Why Do Tiny Fish Live in Only One Desert Pool?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do tiny fish live in only one desert pool?

The Big Idea

Tiny fish live in only one desert pool because they got trapped there as the land dried out! The Devils Hole pupfish lives in a single pool in a cave in the Nevada desert. That pool is not much bigger than a small swimming pool.

Wetter Times

Step one: long ago, the area was wetter. Thousands of years ago, lakes and streams were joined together. Fish could swim from place to place.

Drying Up

Step two: the climate dried out. The lakes and streams shrank, and small groups of fish were trapped in separate springs. They could not swim to each other anymore.

Changing Slowly

Step three: each group changed a little. Over a very long time, each group became its own kind of fish. The Devils Hole pupfish is one of them.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! This tiny fish is a pupfish. It lives in one little pool in a cave. All around is dry desert. Because the pool is so small, people must protect it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! The water in Devils Hole stays about as warm as a bath. That helps the pupfish live there all year. Very few places on Earth hold a fish like this. Visit with respect, and never drop anything in the water.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a tiny pool with a dot for your pupfish. Draw a much bigger circle around it for the desert. Why would a pool this small be easy to damage? Share what you discover with a grown-up.
