What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What useful things do people get from desert plants?

The Big Idea

People get many useful things from desert plants, like food, fiber, oil, and shade! People have used desert plants for thousands of years, and they have learned which ones are safe and helpful. Careful use helps both people and plants, so there is enough left for the future.

Food

Step one: food. Date palms give sweet, chewy fruit that grows in big, heavy bunches, and it has fed people in dry lands for ages. Agave plants make a sweet syrup, and their leaves give strong fiber.

Oils and Skin Care

Step two: oils and skin care. Jojoba seeds make an oil used in lotions. Aloe is used in many skin products too, because its gel feels cool and soothing.

Shade and Shelter

Step three: shade and shelter. Many desert plants also give shade, firewood, and building material, and some are even used to make baskets. We take only what a grown-up says is safe and allowed.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Date palms give us sweet fruit. Agave leaves give strong fiber for rope. Jojoba seeds make oil. And aloe helps soothe skin.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Jojoba oil is really a liquid wax. A date palm can live for a hundred years or more. Agave fiber has been used to make rope, cloth, and mats for hundreds of years. Wild plants belong to nature, so ask before you pick any.
