Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do many desert plants taste bitter or smell strong?

The Big Idea

Many desert plants taste bitter or smell strong, because those are their way to protect themselves! A plant cannot run away from a hungry animal, and its water and food are precious. So it makes chemicals that say, please leave me alone.

Cannot Run

Step one: plants cannot run. A plant cannot run or hide when a grazer arrives. So many plants defend themselves with chemicals that make them taste or smell bad to grazers.

Bitter and Smelly

Step two: bitter and smelly. Bitter tastes, strong smells, and sticky saps tell grazers to leave the plant alone. These chemicals also help seal wounds and fight germs.

Useful to Us

Step three: useful to people. Some of these chemicals are used by people as spices or medicines. Sage is a strong-smelling dry-land plant that people use as a cooking herb, and its smell fills the air on a warm day.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A bitter taste makes grazers spit. A strong smell warns them away. Sticky sap helps heal a wound. And people use some of these plants as herbs.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Plants make smelly chemicals for protection, not for us. Sage is a strong-smelling plant used as a cooking herb. The same chemicals can help the plant fight germs, and they help seal up a wound in a stem. Never taste a wild plant, because some are poisonous.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Smell a few kitchen herbs, such as basil, mint, and rosemary. Which smell is strongest? Plants make these smells for protection, not for us. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
