Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a sidewinder snake travel across loose sand?

The Big Idea

A sidewinder snake travels across loose sand by throwing its body sideways in loops! Only two small spots touch the ground at a time. That gives it grip and keeps most of its body off the hot sand.

Slippery Sand

Step one: sand slips. Loose sand slides away under a normal slither, so a snake has trouble getting a grip. The sidewinder moves in a different way.

Sideways Loop

Step two: loop sideways. It throws its body forward in a sideways loop, so the body lifts into the air. Only two small spots touch the ground at any moment.

Stay Cool

Step three: stay cool. Because most of the body is in the air, the snake touches less hot sand. Its tracks look like a row of slanted lines.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! The sidewinder is a small desert snake. It lifts its body into a loop. Only two spots touch the sand. And it leaves slanted tracks behind it.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Sidewinders leave J-shaped tracks that point the way they went. They bury themselves in the sand to hide, with just their eyes showing. They are most active at night, when the sand is cooler. Stay far away from wild snakes, and never touch one.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Pretend to be a sidewinder. Lift your hands and feet, and slide sideways across a carpet, touching only with two points at a time. Go slowly and clear a safe space first. Is it harder or easier than walking? Tell a grown-up what you noticed.
