Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How do animals help desert seeds spread?
The Big Idea
Animals help desert seeds spread by carrying, burying, eating, and dropping them! A seed that is moved to a good spot has a much better chance to grow. In a desert, a damp spot is rare.
Bury and Forget
Step one: bury and forget. Kangaroo rats and ants gather seeds and bury them for later. They forget a few, and those seeds can sprout.
Eat and Drop
Step two: eat and drop. Birds eat fruit and drop the seeds far away. The seeds can land in new places where there is more room and a bit more water.
Hitchhikers
Step three: hitchhike. Some seeds have tiny hooks that stick to fur or feathers. They travel along, then fall off somewhere new.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A rat buries seeds and forgets some. Ants carry seeds back to their nests. Birds eat fruit and drop seeds far away. And a seed in a lucky spot grows into a new plant.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Ants carry some seeds back to their nests and leave them there. A buried seed is safer from the Sun and from hungry animals. Seeds that travel can find damper places. Never pick or eat wild seeds without a grown-up.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Press a few sticky or burr seeds, or a piece of hook-and-loop tape, onto a sock outside. Which ones stick? This is how some plants hitchhike. Use only seeds a grown-up says are okay. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
