Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some desert plants spread their roots wide but shallow?

The Big Idea

Some desert plants spread their roots wide but shallow to catch rain fast! A desert rain soaks only the top few inches of soil, and it dries quickly. A wide net of roots can drink it up before it disappears.

Short Rain

Step one: rain stays near the top. When rain falls on dry desert ground, it soaks in only a few inches. Then the Sun and wind dry the soil quickly.

Wide Net

Step two: spread the roots. A big saguaro cactus has roots that spread out about as far as the plant is tall. They lie close to the surface, ready to grab water.

Drink Fast

Step three: drink fast. Within a day or so of a rain, new tiny roots can grow and start drinking. The cactus swells as it fills its stem with water.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, a rare rain falls on the sand. Wide roots spread out just under the surface. They drink up the water before it dries away. Then the cactus stores it for later.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! A big saguaro can soak up about 200 gallons of water in one rainy day. That is enough to fill several bathtubs. Its roots are shallow, but they spread very wide. Always bring water of your own when you visit a desert.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist, with a grown-up! Pour a little water onto a tray of dry soil, and see how deep it soaks in after a minute. Water stays near the top! A wide, shallow root net would catch it before it sinks or spreads. Share what you discover with a grown-up.
