Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do some desert shrubs send their roots down 50 feet or more?

The Big Idea

Some desert shrubs send roots down 50 feet or more to reach water far below! Deep underground, the soil stays damp long after the surface dries out. These long roots work like straws and also hold the plant in loose sand.

Dry on Top

Step one: the top dries out. In a desert, the Sun and wind dry the surface soil very quickly. A plant with short roots could run out of water in no time.

Damp Below

Step two: water hides below. Deep underground, soil can stay damp for a very long time. Some water sits far down as groundwater, out of the Sun's reach.

Taproot Straw

Step three: grow a taproot. Mesquite trees grow a long main root, called a taproot, that stretches down to that water. It also anchors the tree, so wind cannot tip it over in loose sand.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Above ground, the plant can look small. The taproot dives down, down, down. At the bottom, it finds damp soil or groundwater. And along the way, it holds the plant steady like an anchor.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Mesquite roots have been found more than 150 feet deep, about 45 meters. A plant's roots can be longer than the plant is tall. That is as long as a very tall building. Look at roots from a safe distance, and never dig alone.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Draw a mesquite tree with a long taproot on a tall sheet of paper. Tape two sheets together if you need more room. How much space does the root need compared with the tree? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Deep roots reach hidden water. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
