Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How does a robot get the energy to move?
The Big Idea
Most robots get their energy from batteries! A battery stores energy that can turn into electricity. That electricity runs the motors and the computer, so the robot can move, sense, and think.
Batteries
Step one: batteries. Inside a battery, chemicals store energy and release it as electricity. A rechargeable battery can be filled up again, so the robot can work day after day.
Plug and Sun
Step two: other sources. Some robots plug into a wall, like big robot arms in factories. Others have solar panels that turn sunlight into electricity, and some small robots work outdoors this way.
Far Away
Step three: special power. Robots on Mars need power for years, so some rovers use special systems made for long trips. Engineers choose the power that fits the robot's trip, whether that is a short drive or a trip across space.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! A battery goes along with the robot. A plug gives steady power, but the robot cannot roam far. Solar panels work best in bright light. When the energy runs out, the robot stops, so it must recharge.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Robot vacuums drive back to a dock to recharge. Bigger robots need bigger batteries, which are heavy. Solar panels make electricity from light, not heat. Never open a battery cover, and ask a grown-up to change batteries.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, your mission! With a grown-up, look at the outside of a toy or gadget. Does it use batteries, a plug, or solar cells? Make a list of three gadgets and how they get energy. Remember, do not open any battery covers!
