Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. How can some people use clicking sounds to sense walls and doorways?

The Big Idea

Some people use soft clicking sounds to sense walls and doorways. This is called echolocation! The clicks bounce off nearby things and come back as echoes. The brain learns to turn those echoes into a picture of the space.

Make A Click

Step one: make a click. Some people who are blind learn to make a sharp clicking sound with their tongues. A short click works well because its echo is easy to notice.

Hear The Echo

Step two: hear the echo. Walls, doorways, and trees send echoes back at slightly different times and tones. Those tiny changes tell where things are and how far away.

Brain Practice

Step three: practice. With lots of practice, the brain learns to build a picture of the space from these small sounds. Sighted people can learn it too.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! First, a soft tongue click goes out. It hits a wall or a doorway. The echo comes back to the ears. The brain uses it to picture the space. It takes lots of practice.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about echolocation. Bats and dolphins use echolocation too. A wall close by gives a quick, bright echo. A faraway wall gives a late, faint echo. Everyone can practice listening.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Sit in a quiet room with your eyes closed, and stay seated so you are safe. Make soft tongue clicks while a friend holds a big board close, then far, in front of you. Can you tell when it is near? Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Echoes can paint a picture without eyes. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
