Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. What is ultrasound, and how do bats and doctors use it?

The Big Idea

Ultrasound is sound with a pitch so high that people cannot hear it! The waves are still real, and they travel through air, water, and the body. Bats, dolphins, doctors, and many machines all use ultrasound.

Super High Pitch

Step one: a super high pitch. Pitch is how high or low a sound is, measured in hertz. People can hear up to about 20,000 hertz. Ultrasound is above that.

Bats And Dolphins

Step two: animals use it. A bat squeaks in ultrasound and listens for the echo to catch a flying insect in the dark. Dolphins do something like it in water.

Doctors Use It

Step three: doctors use it. A wand sends tiny pulses of gentle ultrasound into the body and listens for the echoes. A computer turns the echoes into a picture, even of a baby before it is born.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! Ultrasound has a very high pitch. Bats use it to hunt in the dark. Doctors use it to look inside the body. Machines turn the echoes into a picture. Doctors use gentle strength, so it is safe.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Quick facts about ultrasound. Ultrasound is above about 20,000 hertz. Dogs can hear some sounds that are higher than we can. Doctors use low, gentle strength that is not harmful. Ask a grown-up about it.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, think like a scientist! Ask a grown-up if they have an ultrasound picture, for you or a relative, and look at it together. Then explain how a wand sends sound pulses into the body. And how it listens for the echoes that make the picture! Share what you discover with a grown-up.

Outro

Ultrasound is real sound that we just cannot hear. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
