Why Do Scuba Divers Use Hand Signals Instead of Talking?

What Crafty Clover says in this video

Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do scuba divers use hand signals instead of talking?

The Big Idea

Scuba divers use hand signals because they cannot talk with a breathing tool in their mouths! Sounds underwater are also hard to understand. Hand signals work in any water and any language.

No Talking

Step one: no talking. Divers hold a breathing tool in their mouths to get air from the tank. That makes talking very hard. They breathe from a tank through a mouthpiece, so talking is not an option.

Sound Is Confusing

Step two: sound is confusing. Underwater, sounds are muffled and it is hard to tell where they come from. Water also hides which way a sound came. Even a loud voice would be hard to understand.

Hand Signals

Step three: hand signals. A circle of thumb and finger means okay, a thumbs-up means go up, and a flat hand means stop. These signals work in any water and in any language.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A circle of thumb and finger means okay. A thumbs-up means go up. A flat hand means stop. Divers can also tap a tank to get attention.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Divers also tap their tanks to get each other's attention. The tapping sound travels well through water. Diving needs special training with an instructor, and divers always stay with a buddy. Never try scuba diving without one.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, try a quick experiment! With a friend, practice three signals without speaking. Try okay, up, and stop. Can you carry on a short chat using only gestures? Take turns being the diver.

Outro

Divers use their hands because water makes talking hard, so signals keep everyone safe. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
