Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why can astronauts talk to each other on a spacewalk?

The Big Idea

Astronauts can talk on a spacewalk because they use radio instead of sound traveling through air! A microphone turns their voice into an electrical signal. A radio sends it as radio waves, which can cross empty space.

Voice to Signal

Step one: voice to signal. A microphone in each helmet changes the astronaut's voice into an electrical signal. There is no air to carry sound between them, so sound alone would not work.

Radio Waves

Step two: radio waves. A radio sends the signal out as radio waves. Radio waves can travel through empty space, so they reach the other astronaut.

Signal to Sound

Step three: signal to sound. The other astronaut's radio changes the signal back into sound. That happens inside the helmet, where there is air, so they hear the voice.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! A microphone catches the voice. Radio waves carry it across space. A speaker in the helmet turns it into sound. And the other astronaut hears you.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Radio waves are a kind of light, not sound, so they need no air. Radio waves travel at the speed of light, which is far faster than sound. Phones and TV remotes use waves that are close relatives. Mission control on Earth can listen in using radio too.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, try this! Draw the chain of steps from voice to ear for two astronauts. Voice, microphone, radio waves, speaker, ear. Which steps use sound? Which steps use radio waves?

Outro

Astronauts talk by turning voices into radio waves, and that works even where there is no air at all. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
