Intro
Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why do highways have tall walls beside them?
The Big Idea
Tall walls beside highways are noise barriers that keep traffic sound away from homes! They block, reflect, and sometimes absorb sound waves. So less noise reaches the people nearby, who can then sleep and relax.
Traffic Noise
Step one: traffic is noisy. Cars and trucks make noise from engines, tires, and wind. Sound spreads out from the road in all directions. The noise can be tiring for people who live nearby.
The Wall Blocks
Step two: the wall blocks sound. A noise barrier blocks some sound waves and reflects others back toward the road. Some walls have soft surfaces that soak up sound too.
Over the Top
Step three: taller is better. Some sound still bends over the top, so taller and thicker walls work best. A good wall can lower the noise by about 5 to 10 decibels.
A Closer Look
Let's take a closer look! Traffic makes a lot of noise. The tall wall blocks and reflects it. A little sound bends over the top. So homes behind the wall are much quieter.
Quick Facts
Quick facts! Decibels are the units we use to measure how loud a sound is. A drop of 10 decibels sounds about half as loud to our ears. Trees alone do not stop much sound. Walls with soft surfaces can absorb more.
Think Like a Scientist
Now, think like a detective! Play a quiet tone on a phone. Stand a big book upright between you and the phone. Sit low behind it and listen, then stand up so your ears are above the top. How does the sound change?
Outro
Tall walls block and bend traffic sound, so homes are calmer. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
