Intro

Hi there, curious minds! I'm Crafty Clover! Let's discover something amazing. Why is it hard to tell where a sound is coming from underwater?

The Big Idea

Underwater it is hard to tell where a sound comes from, because sound travels so fast! The time difference between your two ears becomes tiny. Your brain gets confused about the direction.

Two Ears Help

Step one: two ears help. In air, a sound reaches the nearer ear a tiny bit before the farther ear. Your brain uses that tiny delay to work out the direction.

Underwater Is Faster

Step two: sound speeds up. Underwater, sound travels about 4 times faster than in air. So the delay between your ears shrinks to something tiny.

Through Your Head

Step three: through the head. The sound also passes right through your head, so both ears hear it almost together. Your brain has a hard time telling where it came from.

A Closer Look

Let's take a closer look! You have two ears for a reason. Sound reaches them at slightly different times. Underwater, that gap almost disappears. So it is hard to tell which way a sound came from.

Quick Facts

Quick facts! Divers often have to look around to figure out where a boat is. Whales and dolphins have special ways to locate sounds. Turning your head helps you pinpoint a sound in air. Dive and swim only with a grown-up.

Think Like a Scientist

Now, take the mission! Close your eyes and have a friend tap a spoon on a pot lid in different places around you. Point to each sound. Then cover one ear and try again. How does your accuracy change?

Outro

Fast underwater sound makes direction hard to hear, so divers look around. Science is amazing! Crafty Clover can be found on Amazon Books, Google Bookstore, and Apple Books. Available for purchase or download! Bye for now!
